Having a framed movie poster may be the pinnacle of awesomeness. A cool frame around your original edition Scareface poster? That’s “pretty cool, mang,” but putting the wrong poster frame on your collectible may ruin it.

While I’m a fan of cheap movie posters, I am not a fan of putting garbage around movie posters that may be worth  hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. In fact, I’ve heard too many stories of worthless posters being needlessly ruined by a frame that had cheap glue used throughout the binders.

“I had an original poster, a first run, from Alien,” says Marco LaRue, a self-proclaimed “movie maven.” “The poster wasn’t worth thousands of dollars or anything but it was worth a couple hundred and it had a lot of sentimental value too. I bought a frame from Walmart, the cheapest one they had and I put on the poster.”

Marco put the new frame on his poster, inside of the poster clips pinching the poster into place on the plastic, there was a small amount of glue inside the frame.

“I hung up the poster on the wall and it looked okay, not great, but good enough, you know?” said Marco. About a week later, the thing just fell apart and the poster had a white residue along the entire edge. It was ruined.”

Later Marco upgraded his frame for his ruined Alien poster.

“It looked okay in the frame but the poster was ruined and was worthless,” says Marco. “I bought a better frame and put the poster in it.”

If you’re looking for cheap but quality poster frame then looking in a brick-and-mortar store. Easily the best cheap poster frames can be found online but a guy (or gal) looking to protect his wall art have to cheap in mind a few things so you don’t get ripped off.

I like to use eBay for poster frames. They have cheap frames to expensive ones and shipping costs vary from free to “Holy cow, that’s a lot of cash.” The first thing to keep in mind is the size of the posters. Don’t just assume you know the size of the poster, you need to measure it.

“I had a typical one-sheet poster for Back to the Future and I assumed it was 27″ x 40’,” says Donald Lee, a movie poster collector in San Diego. “It wasn’t, actually the poster was a replica from China and it wasn’t authentic but that’s another story. The poster was actually a couple inches shorter that the standard which I didn’t spot. I got the poster frame delivered to me and it was smaller than the poster. I’ve never seen that before. The poster was an irregular. I was totally pissed. Still am, actually.”

Irregular poster sizes are just a few reasons to use caution when looking to buy a poster frame online. Another are used poster frames.

“Oh, there are so many sellers on eBay who sell crap and I’ve been shafted at least three times when it came to [poster] frames,” says 20-year-old ‘80s art lover Margaret Reese. “One time I bought some frames from a new seller on [eBay]. His rates were obscenely low and he offered free shipping so I bought a few. They came in packs so I thought it was a great deal.”

When the frames finally arrived to her house, she was angry at the size.

“When you’re expecting 27″ x 41″ frames and you get mini-poster size, I don’t what chick would be happy with that,” she said. “I tried to contact the seller but he was already banned by eBay and I had PayPal refund my money. It took a month after the close of the auction. Stupid.”

Another popular site to buy poster frames online is Amazon thanks to the e-commerce giant working with third-party sellers. Poster frames are big business on Amazon with hundreds of sellers, not only selling them but making them as well.

“I’ve had great experiences buying poster frames from Amazon,” says Jose Roz of Denver. “Solid craftsmanship, great price and no glare on the frame. Awesome. Looks great with my Ghostbusters poster.”

Those are just two of the best places to buy a cheap poster frame online.
